The Morning Office

To Be Observed on the Hour or Half Hour Between 6 and 9 a.m.

The Call to Prayer

God is King of all the earth;* sing praises with all your skill. God reigns over the nations;* God sits upon his holy throne.

Psalm 47:7-8

The Request for Presence

Be pleased, O God, to deliver me;* O LORD, make haste to help me.

Psalm 70:1

The Greeting

Our God will come and will not keep silence;* before him there is a consuming flame, and round about him a raging storm.

Psalm 50:3

The Refrain for the Morning Lessons

The fool has said in his heart, "There is no God."

Psalm 14:1

A Reading

Jesus taught us, saying: "Who, then, is the wise and trustworthy servant whom the master placed over his household to give them their food at the proper time? Blessed that servant if the master's arrival finds him doing exactly that. In truth I tell you, he will put him in charge of everything he owns. But if the servant is dishonest and says to himself, 'My master is taking his time,' and sets about beating his fellow-servants and eating and drinking with drunkards, his master will come on a day he does not expect and at an hour he does not know. The master will cut him off and send him to the same fate as the hypocrites, where there will be weeping and grinding of teeth."

Matthew 24:45-51

The Refrain

The fool has said in his heart, "There is no God."

The Morning Psalm

The LORDWill Root Out the Remembrance of the Evil

The eyes of the LORD are upon the righteous,* and his ears are open to their cry. The face of the LORD is against those who do evil,* to root out the remembrance of them from the earth. The righteous cry, and the LORD hears them* and delivers them from all their troubles. The LORD is near to the brokenhearted* and will save those whose spirits are crushed. Many are the troubles of the righteous,* but the LORD will deliver him out of them all. He will keep safe all his bones;* not one of them shall be broken.

Psalm 34:15-20

The Refrain

The fool has said in his heart, "There is no God."

The Cry of the Church

Lord, have mercy on us. Christ, have mercy on us. Lord, have mercy on us.

The Lord's Prayer

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be your Name. May your kingdom come, and your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil; for yours are the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen.

The Prayer Appointed for the Week

O God, whose glory it is always to have mercy: Be gracious to all who have gone astray from your ways, and bring us again with penitent hearts and steadfast faith to embrace and hold fast the unchangeable truth of your Word, Jesus Christ your Son; who with you and the Holy Spirit lives and reigns, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

The Concluding Prayer of the Church

Lord God, almighty and everlasting Father, you have brought me in safety to this new day: Preserve me with your mighty power, that I may not fall into sin, nor be overcome by adversity; and in all I do direct me to the fulfilling of your purpose; through Jesus Christ my Lord. Amen.
