Advent at the Vineyard

Series: Advent at the Vineyard

The Hopeful Gospel
Nov 27, 2016
Speaker: Anna Hillaker

This is a season of waiting, a season when we experience the tension between hope, celebration, and joy, and the deep and unsettling knowledge that all is not yet right with the world. We anticipate both the birth of hope, and its need for fulfillment. We wait together for the return of Jesus, when all things will be made well, and the tears of our torn world will be wiped away. Our sermon series over the next four weeks will walk us through the classical themes of Advent: hope, peace, joy, and love. We will be examining each of these through the lens of one assertion: that the gospel that is offered to us in the person of Jesus is very good. Today, we will be spending time looking at the gospel of hope.

Learning to Trust God with your Treasure
    Nov 20, 2016
    Speaker: Donnell Wyche

Here’s the basic idea: Jesus doesn’t invite us to trust and obey him just so that we can avoid a fiery end, instead, he invites us to trust and obey him so that we can start to live our best life now. This is a life that brings the reality of heaven into our present reality and frees us from fear because we follow a resurrected Messiah who conquered and destroyed death and calls us to follow him into life.

Better Together because We Belong to God & Each Other
    Nov 13, 2016
    Speaker: Donnell Wyche

We are taking some time this fall to explore what it means to live a life reflective of the path that Jesus calls us to, what is often called discipleship. Discipleship isn’t about adding more things to your to-do list, and it certainly isn’t about earning God’s grace and mercy. Instead, it is about being transformed into the image of Jesus, it is about our lives becoming reflective of the love we have received. The tools we are exploring in this series are just that— resources for growth. Through our Spirit-filled lives, we begin to lean into the reality that God is indeed making all things new, and that we are enabled to participate in that transformation, beginning with our own lives.

    We are What We Worship
    Oct 30, 2016
    Speaker: Donnell Wyche

You’ve undoubtedly heard the idiom, “You become what you worship.” We see echoes of this idiom throughout scripture whether in Jeremiah 2:5 or Psalm 115:1-8. The idea that we become what we worship is true both in the positive and negative sense. So, it’s important that we are mindful of images of God we create and therefore worship. As the Psalm says, “those who make idols will be like them.”

    Learning to Engage the Bible
    Oct 23, 2016
    Speaker: Donnell Wyche

The Bible gives us almost no instruction for how to incorporate the habits of engaging scripture in our daily lives. So, as we look back to the first century for help, we discover that the habits were already woven into the daily lives of the early church.
