The Art of Neighboring

The Art of Neighboring

The Art of Getting Along
July 10, 2016
Speaker: Donnell Wyche
At the center of being a good neighbor is learning how to get along with those all around us. When we are surrounded by great neighbors, we are willing to share a key to our house, invite them over for dinner, and spend our previous free-time hanging out with these former strangers.

    Benefits of Loving Your Neighbors
    July 3, 2016
    Speaker: Donnell Wyche
When we practice the art of neighboring, we can extend our lives. Study after study report a simple fact, people who know their neighbors live longer. Why? When you believe that your neighbors are generally trustworthy, you're more likely to interact with them. Whether it's a chat by the mailbox, a helping hand with packages, or simply a wave and a smile, this type of interaction can lift your mood, reduce your stress, and instill a sense of belonging.

    Flexibility & Compassion

“Who is my neighbor?” remains unanswered by Jesus. Maybe because that question implies selectivity about who should be loved and shown mercy. Instead, Jesus reflects on the larger question, maybe the one the expert should have posed, “To whom must I become a neighbor?” You cannot answer this question with a list, or a definition of neighbor.

You can only answer this question having caught God’s heart, having experienced God’s love, his mercy, his grace, for yourself. This is a heart response. As our heart is shaped and (re)formed by God, it changes the way we act. It changes the way we behave.

Jesus Welcomes the Oppressed & Oppressor, Pt. I

On his way to Jerusalem to celebrate the Passover, Jesus passes through the ancient city of Jericho. For any of us who grew up near or in the church that city name might ring some bells or maybe you are remembering its name from watching those VeggieTales movies. Jericho was a powerful walled city that is the first city that the nation of Israel led by God himself captures as they make their way from slavery in Egypt to a land that was promised. Fast-forwarding to our scripture text today in Luke 18:35-43 - Luke 19, we find Jesus along with his disciples on their way to Jerusalem passing through the ancient city of Jericho.
