Advent at the Vineyard

Advent at the Vineyard

Advent #2: Forgiveness Produces Peace
December 6, 2015
When we just attribute our active peace-breaking to sin, we can excuse our participation and responsibility in breaking the peace. We might turn to the first humans who took what didn’t belong to them in the garden, forever condemning the rest of us to a live of sin and rebellion. This gives way to us saying that since we have been born into sin, we aren’t responsible for our actions.

Advent #1: God With Us: Hope Through Vulnerability
    November 29, 2015
So we’re weak. Incredibly vulnerable. We are like the grass and flowers of the field. We are like grasshoppers. Not very flattering images. And the Lord is powerful, mighty, so far beyond us. Again, how is this comforting? How is this good news? It kind of sounds like God is just showing off, impatiently listing all of the amazing divine attributes we’re missing out on. If we look closer, it becomes clear that Yahweh is systematically obliterating all of our sources of security. For some reason, it seems that understanding our vulnerability— really recognizing it, is essential to God’s message of good news.

The Book of Jonah #4: God’s Message to the Oppressors and the Oppressed
    November 22, 2015
God will extend mercy to the Assyrians when Jonah knows, beyond a shadow of a doubt, that a second chance is not deserved. They are simply TOO evil. They could never actually repent. They will oppress me and my people again and again and again because that is who they are and that is what they do.

The Book of Jonah #3: The God of Second Chances
    November 15, 2015
Jonah, a successful and well-liked prophet in Israel during the reign of the evil King Jeroboam II. He was a political insider, having successfully prophesied that God would grant Israel military power, expansion, and growth — all of this favor from God in spite of Israel’s refusal to adhere to the Law and to trust God.

The Book of Jonah #1: The God of Second Chances
    November 1, 2015
Jonah is the fifth in the collection of the minor prophets. Yet Jonah stands as one of the most familiar and popular books of the Bible–often finding its way into most children’s bibles. Any familiarity with Jonah shouldn’t cause us to quickly dismiss Jonah assuming its just a kid’s story ignoring the rich complexity this story offers with notes of compassion, mercy, and second chances, all of which together nudge us towards reconciliation with ourselves, each other, and God.
